چکیده

A new approach to determine the LHC luminosity is investigated. Instead of employing the proton–proton luminosity measurement, we suggest to measure directly the parton– parton luminosity. It is shown that the electron and muon pseudorapidity distributions, originating from the decay of W, W and Z bosons produced at 14 TeV pp collisions (LHC), constrain the x distributions of sea and valence quarks and antiquarks in the range from ≈ 3 × 10 to ≈ 10 at a Q of about 10 GeV. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that, once the quark and antiquark structure functions are constrained from the W and Z production dynamics, other qq̄ related scattering processes at the LHC like qq̄ → WW can be predicted accurately. Thus, the lepton pseudorapidity distributions provide the key to a precise parton luminosity monitor at the LHC, with accuracies of ≈ ±1% compared to the so far considered goal of ±5%. submitted to Physical Review D

Double parton scatterings in b-quark pairs production at the LHC

A sizable rate of events where two pairs of b-quarks are produced contemporarily is foreseen at the CERN LHC, as a consequence of the large parton luminosity. At very high energies both single and the double parton scatterings contribute to the process, the latter mechanisms, although power suppressed, giving the dominant contribution to the integrated cross section. Measurement of the muon charge asymmetry in inclusive pp to WX production at sqrt(s)=7 TeV and an improved determination of light parton distribution functions

Measurements of the muon charge asymmetry in inclusive pp → W + X production at √ s = 7 TeV are presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb−1 recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC. With a sample of more than 20 million W→ μν events, the statistical precision is greatly improved in comparison to previous measurements. These new results provide additional cons...

A method for identifying H → ττ → e ± μ ∓ / p T at the CERN LHC

Weak boson fusion promises to be a copious source of intermediate mass Higgs bosons at the LHC. The additional very energetic forward jets in these events provide for powerful background suppression tools. We analyze the subsequent H → ττ → eμ/ pT decay for Higgs boson masses in the 100-150 GeV range. A parton level analysis of the dominant backgrounds demonstrates that this channel allows the ...

Impact of future HERA data on the determination of proton parton distribution functions using the ZEUS NLO QCD fit

The high precision and large kinematic coverage of the data from the HERA-I running period (1994-2000) have already allowed precise extractions of proton parton distribution functions. The HERA-II running program is now underway and is expected to provide a substantial increase in the luminosity collected at HERA. In this paper, a study is presented which investigates the potential impact of fu...
